WHAT IS ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT)?

ACT is a form of mindfulness-based therapy that focuses on accepting and experiencing negative thoughts
and feelings while living our best and most valued lives.

HOW DOES ACT HELP DIETITIANS?

You know your role in nutrition counseling is about much more than nutrition education and meal planning. Many of the more challenging aspects of counseling and behavior change, what dietitians are often tasked to help with in individual counseling settings, can be achieved with the integration of ACT.

We’ve brought together 3 experts from the perspectives of psychology, nutrition counseling, and eating disorders to teach dietitians how, when and why you can infuse and use ACT in your work with clients.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • An advanced look in to ACT including a deep dive in to the six core processes of ACT

  • How ACT is applied specifically in the nutrition counseling setting

  • When and why to use ACT techniques with clients

  • How ACT can advance your practice and help your clients thrive

  • Case studies and workshop-style exercises

  • The science of ACT: Studies and additional reading materials will be provided

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

  • WHY ACT?

It is commonly experienced by registered dietitians who provide individual nutrition counseling, that clients arrive seeking support for various levels of suffering related to their food and body experiences. Dietitians can effectively utilize ACT within their scope of practice as a nutrition counselor or eating disorder treatment provider. ACT provides a therapeutic framework for how dietitians can help clients understand their suffering and build cognitive flexibility to find a more meaningful and satisfying way of relating to food and their bodies.

  • SIX ONLINE WORKSHOPS:

There will be six live online workshops, delivered by an experienced ACT trainer where we will step you through each of the six core processes of ACT then bring it to life with case examples and reflective activities. You will be invited to participate in during the live workshops, optimizing your learning.

  • MORE WAYS TO LEARN:

Between live workshops, you’ll get worksheets, case studies, handouts that are ready to use with clients, and bonus reading materials which will complete the training syllabus.

  • LONG TERM ACCESS:

Can’t join us live, or enjoy reviewing materials again? That’s OK! You’ll be able to watch and access all course materials and videos as many times as you need right from your Teachable classroom.

ACT has been instrumental in re-energising my practice with new skills which support my clients, AND me! It literally changed the way I practice.” ~ Course participant

ACT is……

A third-wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which integrates mindfulness and Buddhist principles into a practical and realistic understanding of the human experience. If you have already done some training in Mindfulness, CBT, Motivational Interviewing or Self Compassion, this is a perfect next step – in this course you’ll recognise how each of these modalities or practices can be woven together in ways which enhance your own skills and confidence to support your clients in ways which are both meaningful and long-lasting.

ACT is also….

A great match for weight inclusive dietetic practice

It is common that we find ourselves hitting some tough points when we are guiding our clients through the healing process. When used alongside the weight-inclusive paradigm Health At Every Size ® and Non Diet Approaches such as Intuitive Eating, we can supercharge our practice in ways which offer a solid framework of care and skills which last a lifetime.

Easy to understand, and put into practice

ACT uses many stories and metaphor to bring ideas to life, supporting both our, and our clients learnings. Although the theoretical foundation of ACT (Relational Frame Theory) has some complexity to it, the way we would bring this into practice allows us to be both flexible, and specific to meet our clients needs.

ARE YOU READY?

When your clients present with difficulty in their relationships with food, eating and body image, it can be tricky to support them to both disentangle from the dominant weight-centric paradigms AND offer an effective, evidence-based alternative.
