EMDR in Eating Disorder Treatment: A Collaborative Approach

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has shown to be an effective treatment modality for many populations, including people recovering from eating disorders. This presentation will identify the definition and basic utilization of EMDR, as well as provide references for its efficacy in treating eating disorders. Skills for collaborating with EMDR therapists, while supporting eating disorder clients, will also be introduced.
Learning Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will:
- Learn the background and efficacy of EMDR.
- Learn at least one way that EMDR can be beneficial in eating disorder treatment.
- Learn one to two ways to collaborate with EMDR therapists.
Lisah Sutton-Williams, LCSW, LMFT Bio:
Lisah Sutton-Williams is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Kentucky and Indiana, as well as the founder of Intentional Connections Counseling, LLC in Louisville, KY. She earned her Bachelors and Master’s degrees from the University of Louisville and has been a practicing clinician for over 16 years. During that time, Lisah’s areas of specialty have become anxiety, trauma, eating disorders/disordered eating, and body image.
She is a Certified EMDR therapist and EMDRIA-Approved Consultant who helps teach and support new EMDR clinicians. Additionally, she has extensive training in TF-CBT, Brainspotting, and Somatic Psychology. Lisah is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and Certified Yoga Teacher, using a non-diet, weight-inclusive, body-neutral approach to help clients improve their relationship with food and their bodies. She uses all of these modalities to work with individuals, couples, and families to intentionally reshape their past and create a new story for their lives, while connecting mind and body.
Lisah believes that intentional connections and judgment-free, supportive spaces are a vital part of the therapeutic process, and she works diligently to provide this to all of her clients.
