
Myths vs. Facts: Understanding Adolescent & Young Adult Gender Care

In this presentation, we will explore the complex and often misunderstood topic of adolescent gender care, shedding light on common myths and presenting evidence-based facts. We will discuss the critical role of comprehensive healthcare teams and the myth that gender-affirming care poses undue risks, providing data to support its safety and positive outcomes. We will discuss different levels of support and what that may look like in clinical practice. We will discuss the positive impact of supportive environments on the mental and emotional well-being of transgender and gender-diverse adolescents, while also discussing the reality of what gender care looks like for various age ranges.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Dispel Common Myths: To educate the audience about prevalent myths and misconceptions surrounding adolescent gender care & to provide evidence-based information that counters these myths and promotes a more accurate understanding of gender identity
- Highlight the Importance of Inclusive and Supportive Care: To emphasize the critical role of healthcare professionals, educators, and parents in providing inclusive, respectful, and affirming care for adolescents exploring their gender identity & to discuss the positive impact of supportive environments on the mental and emotional well-being of transgender and gender-diverse adolescents
- Foster Dialogue and Understanding: To encourage open and respectful dialogue and promote a safe space for questions and discussions related to adolescent gender care
Jordan Held (he/him) Bio:
Jordan Held, LCSW (he/him) is the President & Founder of Relentless Pursuit Therapy & Consulting. Jordan specializes in trauma, the LGBTQ+ community, complex family dynamics, and young adults discharging treatment settings. Jordan’s practice centers around creating a healing-centered space for adolescents and their families, working to decrease negative patterns and strengthen the family system. Jordan provides consultations, supervision, trainings, and education.
Jordan is an international speaker on the creation of belonging for gender diverse youth and represents both the Los Angeles LGBT Center and The Laurel Foundation on their Board of Directors. In addition, he facilitates family support groups through JQ International and Transforming Family and is an affiliate of the NCTSN. Jordan has published multiple journal articles on gender and sexual minority youth and the intersectionality of trauma. As a proud queer, trans guy, Jordan is dedicated to developing gender euphoria and trans love.
