SUMMARY:Navigating Dual Challenges: Substance Use and Disordered Eating
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore the complex intersection of substance use disorders and eating disorders. We’ll examine prevalence rates\, differences in presentation across eating disorder subtypes\, and the often-debated question of which condition to treat first. \nThis session will also explore the overlap between recovery models for addiction and eating disorders\, and the functional roles these behaviors may serve. Providers will walk away feeling more equipped to work with these types of clients that are often deemed “difficult” and “resistant\,” but are often just misunderstood.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nFollowing this presentation\, participants will be able to: \n\nDifferentiate how substance use may manifest across various eating disorder presentations and identify key clinical features in each.\nEvaluate theoretical and practical considerations in determining treatment for clients with both eating disorders and substance use disorders.\nApply an integrated\, trauma-informed framework to understand the functional roles of these disorders and guide effective\, compassionate treatment planning.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLevel: B/C\n\n\nLevel B: Skills and Application\nAt this level\, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency\, problem-solving\, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.\n\nLevel C: Advanced Practice\nThis level focuses on mastery\, specialized expertise\, and complex problem-solving. Participants integrate advanced concepts\, lead initiatives\, and address challenging cases with sophisticated strategies. Ideal for experienced professionals aiming to refine and elevate their practice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nSydney Greene\, MS\, RDN\, CEDS Bio:\n\nSydney Greene has worked in the behavioral nutrition space as a Registered Dietitian in private practice\, freelance writer\, speaker\, and consultant to addiction treatment facilities. Her focus areas are nutrition for addiction recovery\, eating disorders\, and body image. She holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in nutrition from New York University\, belongs to the International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians\, and serves as the Addictions Resource Professional for the Behavioral Health Nutrition Practice Group of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In recovery from her own eating and substance use disorders\, Sydney’s goal is to reach more individuals with the message that supportive eating can be a stepping stone to recovery.
