SUMMARY:Internal Family Systems as a Liberatory Approach for Eating Disorder Nutrition Counseling
DESCRIPTION:Eating disorder treatment often replicates punitive justice systems that not only leave many clients unsupported but actually harmed. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a framework that can support dietitians to step outside of these systems.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nFollowing this presentation\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the basic framework of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. \nIdentify how to integrate the IFS framework into nutrition counseling. \nDiscern between talking about the framework and doing IFS.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLevel: A/B\nLevel A: Foundational Knowledge\n\nThis level introduces core concepts\, terminology\, and basic principles. Participants gain a solid understanding of essential information needed to build competence in the subject area. Ideal for newcomers or those seeking a structured overview.\n\n\nLevel B: Skills and Application\n\n\n\nAt this level\, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency\, problem-solving\, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nMimosa Collins\, RD Bio:\n\nMimosa Collins obtained her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the University of Vermont and graduated with honors as a result of her research in Food and Culture. She is a registered dietitian and founder of Rejoyn Wholeness\, a virtual private practice committed to equitable\, accessible\, and client-centered nutrition counseling. Mimosa has nearly a decade of experience working with individuals and families facing eating disorders\, including three years as lead dietitian in the Partial Hospitalized and Intensive Outpatient levels of care. Mimosa completed her Level 1 Training in Internal Family Systems therapy in 2020 and continues honing her craft through supervision and serving as a program assistant to multiple BIPOC Affinity Level 1 IFS Training groups over the years.\n\nMimosa began her career as a dietitian in community health and interned at farms throughout the country to learn about food systems from the source. These early years laid the foundation for her dedication to disrupting oppressive practices in both her professional and private life. With this intention\, she works with psychodramatist Dr Leticia Nieto\, is part of the Eating Disorder Harm Reduction provider’s network facilitated by Gloria Lucas\, and continues working with mentors and educators to unlearn white supremacy culture. Her passion for client-centered care as liberatory care has been shared through regional conferences\, workshops\, and mentorship. Through her work\, Mimosa continues to challenge traditional models of treatment by illuminating power imbalance in eating disorder recovery and disrupting that imbalance one client at a time.
