SUMMARY:Navigating Adolescent Athletes with Eating Disorders in Outpatient Care
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores how clinicians can effectively support adolescent athletes navigating eating disorders within an outpatient setting. Topics include conducting a thorough assessment to determine when early outpatient interventions may be appropriate and how to meaningfully involve parents from the start. \nWe’ll examine clinical indicators for transitioning to FBT or higher levels of care when progress stalls or symptoms escalate. Guidance will be provided on safely integrating exercise and sport throughout recovery using athlete‑specific best practices\, along with practical fueling strategies tailored to the high energy demands of this population. The session emphasizes meeting families where they are\, maintaining safety\, and supporting sustainable performance and healing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nFollowing this presentation\, participants will: \n\nIdentify assessment strategies: Equip clinicians to identify when outpatient care is appropriate for adolescent athletes with eating disorders and apply effective methods for engaging parents early in treatment.\nDifferentiate levels of care: Enable providers to recognize clinical indicators that warrant initiating Family‑Based Treatment (FBT) or recommending higher levels of care when outpatient progress is limited.\nIntegrate sport and fueling safely: Strengthen clinician ability to guide athletes and families in safely returning to sport\, following athlete‑specific best practices\, and implementing fueling strategies that meet elevated energy needs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLevel B: Skills and Application\n\n\nAt this level\, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency\, problem-solving\, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.\n  \nKatie Gilder\, MPH\, RD\, LD Bio: \n\n\nKatie has worked for the last 15 years in multiple settings and has experience with adolescents and families as well as adults. She has specialized in helping adolescents and young adults with eating disorders for the past 10 years\, has extensive training and experience in supporting families with FBT(TAY)\, and believes in individualizing care for clients and families. She works to help people find the food philosophy that works for them and improve their relationship with food through a Health At Every Size lens.\nKatie loves to bust those diet-culture myths\, helping her clients develop media literacy around the diet and exercise industry. Katie enjoys grocery shopping (of course)\, soaking up sunshine\, practicing yoga\, and trying new restaurants in her free time.

SUMMARY:Weight Inclusive Diabetes and Eating Disorders December Consult Group
DESCRIPTION:Join your colleagues for a monthly group consultation focused specifically on supporting your clients & patients with diabetes and eating disorders/disordered eating\, facilitated by Erin Phillips\, MPH\, RD\, CDCES\, eating disorder dietitian and diabetes specialist. \nIn this laid-back group format\, we’ll discuss specific questions and topics brought by you specific to diabetes and disordered eating. People with diabetes are up to three times as likely to develop an eating disorder than those without diabetes\, but many clinicians feel that the recommendations for each of these diagnoses contradict each other\, leaving you and your clients & patients feeling stuck. This group is intended to provide guidance to this nuance. \nTo get you started\, here are some examples of what you might bring to the group: \n\nMedications\, side effects\, and how to discuss them with your client/patient\nWhere to start when your ED client/patient is diagnosed with diabetes\nWhat to know about insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors\nCase consultation on co-occurring diabetes and eating disorder\n\nRegistration is required\, and we’ll limit the number of members to 8 in order to keep it participatory. The group will take place monthly and will require registration each month. After registering\, you’ll receive information about where to send questions\, topics\, or your case study. \nRegistration opens here two weeks prior to the event. \n\n\n\n\n\nErin Phillips Bio:\nErin (she/her) is a Registered Dietitian (RD) whose work is grounded in Health at Every Size and fat-positive nutrition. She has an advanced certification as a diabetes specialist (CDCES) and has spent most of her career working with people living with all types of diabetes. \nShe has a private practice that focuses primarily on the intersection of diabetes and eating disorders. She works with people living with diabetes through individual counseling as well as providing consultation to clinicians looking to be more grounded and confident in supporting their clients and patients with co-occurring diagnoses of diabetes and eating disorders. \nWhile she loves geeking out over diabetes technology and blood sugar trends\, Erin also uses therapeutic techniques to guide her clients toward self-compassion and embodiment and finds both of these equally helpful in making peace with food and diabetes. \nErin has been a dietitian since 2008 and received advanced training in eating disorders\, HAES\, and Intuitive Eating. She has an undergraduate degree in food and nutrition science from Seattle Pacific University and a graduate degree in public health nutrition from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. \nOutside of the office\, she loves rock climbing in the pacific northwest\, breakfast\, and showing you pictures of her cat (as often as you’ll let her!).

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Recovery in College and Beyond: Supporting the Transition to Emerging Adulthood
DESCRIPTION:The transition to college represents a critical developmental period marked by increased independence\, shifting routines\, changes in food access and eating environments\, and reduced caregiver oversight. For adolescents and young adults with eating disorders\, these changes may introduce new vulnerabilities to symptom recurrence or relapse\, particularly when recovery is incomplete\, supports are withdrawn too quickly\, or early warning signs go unrecognized. \nEating disorder professionals play an important role in helping patients and families determine readiness for college\, anticipate potential challenges\, and develop individualized plans that balance increasing autonomy with the level of support necessary to protect recovery. Dietitians are particularly well-positioned to assess whether patients can reliably meet nutritional needs across changing environments/routines and to identify subtle changes in eating behavior. \nThis presentation will examine why the transition to college can represent a period of heightened vulnerability for individuals with eating disorders and identify clinical indicators of both readiness and risk. Participants will learn practical\, evidence-informed strategies for preparing patients for the nutritional\, social\, environmental\, and developmental demands of college while maintaining appropriate recovery supports. The presentation will further explore the transition from caregiver-supported recovery toward greater patient autonomy using a collaborative\, patient-centered model focused on establishing clear expectations\, monitoring plans\, relapse prevention strategies\, and thresholds for increasing support when concerns emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nFollowing this presentation\, participants will: \n\nEvaluate the transition to college as a period of potential vulnerability for eating disorder onset\, recurrence and relapse and identify clinical indicators of recovery stability and college readiness. \nIdentify nutrition-specific markers of college readiness and implement strategies to support adequate\, consistent\, and flexible nutrition across common college environments. \nDevelop individualized transition and relapse-prevention plans that appropriately balance emerging autonomy with caregiver involvement\, treatment team support\, monitoring\, and timely escalation of care.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLevel: A/B\nLevel A: Foundational Knowledge\n\nThis level introduces core concepts\, terminology\, and basic principles. Participants gain a solid understanding of essential information needed to build competence in the subject area. Ideal for newcomers or those seeking a structured overview.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLevel B: Skills and Application\nAt this level\, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency\, problem-solving\, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\nKelly Bhatnagar\, Ph.D.\, FAED Bio:\nDr. Kelly Bhatnagar (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist who has specialized in the scientific study and treatment of eating disorders and related psychological conditions for over 20 years.
