Meet EDRDpro member Amy Hanneke, RDN! You can follow Amy or say hello @satisfynutrition on Instagram.

If you didn’t do what you do professionally, what other job or field would you have pursued, and why?

I would 100% be a cupcake baker. I actually did a rotation at a cupcake shop as a dietitian intern and loved the hustle of small business work + the abundance of buttercream!

Just for fun, tell us something most people don’t know about you!

I’m TERRIFIED of turtles. I hate them! No, I don’t know why. Yes, I know it doesn’t make sense.

Where do you work?

I work at a residential eating disorder recovery center! We specialize in adult care, so ages 18+. I feel grateful every day to work alongside some of the most passionate people I know, creating a healing space and providing support.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I really love the hands-on aspects of working in residential. Since care is 24/7 and all meals and snacks are on-site, I really like that I can see what’s going on for clients as their day progresses and getting to see clients twice a week. When we’re not having to follow social distancing precautions, restaurant exposures are my favorite part of the week!

Why eating disorders treatment? What drives you?

I love this question because I distinctly remember sitting in a nutrition class in undergrad thinking I wouldn’t ever work with eating disorders because it seemed complicated… which is exactly why I love what I do! There are so many layers to unpack, and I think the nature of our work necessitates that we get to know and connect with our clients deeply in order to build a lasting recovery.

Who are your favorite social media influencers in the non-diet, recovery, body liberation space?

How much time do you have? Some of my favorites include @hannahrdn, @moxiemind, @foodheaven, @encouragingdietitian.

What are your favorite books that have made a difference in the way you work?

Dare to Lead by Brené Brown has made a huge impact on how I view courage, vulnerability, and communication, both in sessions and in meetings! I also love introducing content from The F*ck It Diet by Caroline Dooner and Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison into session to help guide conversations about food and bodies on both an individual and systemic level.

What is one non-diet, Intuitive Eating, or Health at Every Size® pearl of wisdom you’d like to share?

I don’t care how much your eating disorder might say otherwise – you deserve recovery and the chance to live a full, colorful, and nourished life.
