Enteral Feeding as a Treatment Intervention in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

The utilization of enteral nutrition (EN) in the treatment of eating disorders is a common intervention, however the application varies considerably. This webinar will examine the use of nasogastric (NG) tube feedings as a treatment intervention to support medical stabilization and nutritional rehabilitation with consideration to the role of the dietitian and the balance of oral (PO) nutrition. The webinar will briefly cover enteral feedings in various settings and levels of care, diagnostic profiles, and medical comorbidities.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Determine indications and appropriateness of utilization of enteral feedings.
  2. Conceptualize nutrition plans when oral (PO) nutrition and enteral (EN) are both offered.
  3. Understand risks and potential complications and contraindications of enteral feedings.

Elysse Thebner Miller, MPH, RDN, LDN, CEDS-C Bio:

Elysse Thebner Miller, MPH, RDN, LDN, CEDS-C is a registered dietitian with fifteen years of clinical and supervisory experience treating eating disorders across the lifespan in inpatient and outpatient settings. She co-authored DBT Principles and Strategies in the Multidisciplinary Treatment of Eating Disorders, published 2024, with Spanish translation expected 2025. She is currently the Regional Nutrition Manager of North Carolina for The Emily Program.
