Nourishing Healing Through Culture & Tradition: Addressing Eating Disorders in AAPI Communities

This presentation explores the cultural, social, and systemic factors influencing eating disorders in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. We will examine the role of food in AAPI cultures, challenges in accessing culturally competent eating disorder care, and strategies for providing culturally sensitive nutrition and mental health support. Attendees will gain insights into addressing cultural stigma and fostering healing for AAPI individuals with eating disorders.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the unique cultural factors and social pressures contributing to eating disorders in AAPI communities.
  2. Discuss the barriers to accessing culturally-competent eating disorder treatment and nutrition care for AAPI individuals.
  3. Develop strategies to incorporate culturally-informed practices into eating disorder care and nutrition counseling for AAPI individuals.

Janice Chow, MS, RD Bio:

Janice Chow, MS, RD is a Registered Dietitian, recognized nutrition expert, author, and speaker. Through her private practice, The Mindful Chow, she empowers Asians and Pacific Islanders to break their cultural obsession with thinness using the Health At Every Size™ approach and seek mind-body health. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science from UC Berkeley before completing her Dietetic Internship and Masters of Science in Dietetics & Nutrition at Tufts University. Janice has 11 years of experience in clinical nutrition, community wellness, and nutrition education promoting weight-inclusive and culturally-sensitive nutrition care. Her writing and expertise have been featured in numerous publications, media outlets, and podcasts, including Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, MSN, National Eating Disorder Association, WellSeek Collective, Mx. Asian American, The Hotpot with the Princess and the DJ, and many more. In March 2023, she co-authored and published a toolkit with Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum on designing culturally responsive nutrition programs in the community setting. She has been an active volunteer in the dietetics field, previously serving as a preceptor and mentor for clinical rotations, Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and Diversify Dietetics. Lastly, she is a speaker for several universities and organizations in the United States and China, sharing about food, culture, and social factors that impact healthcare in Asian Pacific Islander populations. During her leisure time, she enjoys traveling with her husband and cooking for families and friends.
