Rethinking Gender Affirming Care: Case Review

March 25 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

This engaging case review session invites participants to go beyond theoretical knowledge and actively apply gender-affirming principles to real-life clinical scenarios. Participants will engage deeply with complex case scenarios that highlight the lived experiences of gender-diverse clients, emphasizing the importance of embodiment and unlearning cisnormative frameworks in clinical care. The session begins with a 15-minute review of foundational principles, including the impact of internalized cisnormativity, anti-fat bias, and societal expectations on both gender identity and disordered eating. Building on this foundation, participants will dive into interactive case discussions that highlight common clinical dilemmas, such as navigating misgendering, unpacking the impact of systemic oppression, and supporting clients through complex identity development and embodiment.  Rooted in anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and liberation-focused care, this session challenges clinicians to expand their understanding of gender and embodiment, offering tools to support inclusive care for gender-diverse clients in eating disorder recovery.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explore gender-affirming care strategies through case review and learn about using more inclusive language with gender-expansive clients.
  2. Cultivate greater empathy and awareness of the unique challenges faced by gender-expansive clients and clinicians in eating disorder recovery, leading to more inclusive and affirming care.
  3. Identify areas where implicit biases may be present in their work and learn strategies to mitigate these biases for more equitable and compassionate care.
