Beyond the Hand-Off: Intersectional Strategies for Safe and Affirming Referrals

April 24 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

This webinar will explore how intersectionality, such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, body size, etc., in eating disorder (ED) care impacts clients, especially in the referral stage of ED treatment. This webinar will focus on things like structural competence, lived experiences, and integrated care to overcome barriers like stigma, lack of culturally competent providers, and inaccessible resources, creating equitable pathways to treatment for marginalized individuals by meeting them where they are.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will:

  1. Define how providers can interrogate their own positionality, privileges, and biases and how they will apply these principles in their daily work with clients.
  2. Define what “harm” looks like in common referral pathways.
  3. List Practical steps to map, audit, and maintain a referral network rooted in justice and inclusivity.
  4. Learn how to ask critical questions before making a referral

Level B: Skills and Application

At this level, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency, problem-solving, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.
