Hypermetabolism in Eating Disorder Treatment: Challenges and Clinical Considerations

June 26 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

This presentation explores the phenomenon of hypermetabolism in individuals undergoing treatment for eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa. The discussion covers the physiological mechanisms behind this response, including hormonal and metabolic adaptations to starvation and re-nourishment. We will examine how hypermetabolism can complicate treatment by increasing caloric requirements and potentially slowing weight gain despite adequate or increased intake. Clinical implications are discussed, including the need for individualized nutrition plans, ongoing monitoring, and the importance of education for patients and caregivers to support compliance and prevent relapse. Strategies for effectively and compassionately managing hypermetabolism in treatment settings will be highlighted, with an emphasis on promoting safe, sustained recovery using an all-foods-fit and HAES-informed approach.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common clinical signs and symptoms of hypermetabolism in patients undergoing nutritional rehabilitation.
  2. Describe evidence-based nutritional and medical strategies for managing hypermetabolism during refeeding.
  3. Apply multidisciplinary approaches to support safe, individualized treatment plans that account for metabolic variability.
