Promoting Effective Care Collaboration with Caregivers of Teens with Eating Disorders: Specific Strategies for Dietitians

This webinar will provide examples and techniques for having difficult conversations with parents as a dietitian, including thorough considerations for helping clinicians in maintaining parental support to promote effective care collaboration for their teen or child.

*This is not an FBT-specific conversation; rather, some techniques to use when communicating with caregivers in any scenario or treatment structure.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will:

  1. Understand the role of the parent/caregiver in adolescent care and how to involve them in treatment for the best outcomes.
  2. Identify key conversations to have with parents and how to have them
  3. Strategize what to do when a parent/caregiver disagrees with your treatment plan and how to navigate supporting your client in these situations.
  4. Recognize other opportunities to involve caregivers in treatment and how to utilize support systems in your care

Gretchen Wallace, MS, RD, LD Bio:

Gretchen has been in the eating disorder field since 2016 with extensive experience treating adolescents and young adults. She has worked on college campuses, in eating disorder treatment facilities, has developed early intervention programs, and volunteers with Casa de Salud in Saint Louis. She is the owner of Full Life Nutrition Counseling out of Saint Louis, MO, and also writes The Full Life newsletter covering anything and everything that has to do with food, bodies, exercise, and treating ourselves well. When she’s not with clients she is probably with her husband and dogs (Rita and Barry) trying new restaurants, going for a hike, camping, or catching up on a favorite tv show.
