Navigating Adolescent Athletes with Eating Disorders in Outpatient Care

December 9 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PST

This presentation explores how clinicians can effectively support adolescent athletes navigating eating disorders within an outpatient setting. Topics include conducting a thorough assessment to determine when early outpatient interventions may be appropriate and how to meaningfully involve parents from the start.

We’ll examine clinical indicators for transitioning to FBT or higher levels of care when progress stalls or symptoms escalate. Guidance will be provided on safely integrating exercise and sport throughout recovery using athlete‑specific best practices, along with practical fueling strategies tailored to the high energy demands of this population. The session emphasizes meeting families where they are, maintaining safety, and supporting sustainable performance and healing.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will:

  1. Identify assessment strategies: Equip clinicians to identify when outpatient care is appropriate for adolescent athletes with eating disorders and apply effective methods for engaging parents early in treatment.
  2. Differentiate levels of care: Enable providers to recognize clinical indicators that warrant initiating Family‑Based Treatment (FBT) or recommending higher levels of care when outpatient progress is limited.
  3. Integrate sport and fueling safely: Strengthen clinician ability to guide athletes and families in safely returning to sport, following athlete‑specific best practices, and implementing fueling strategies that meet elevated energy needs

Level B: Skills and Application

At this level, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency, problem-solving, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.
