Internal Family Systems as a Liberatory Approach for Eating Disorder Nutrition Counseling

November 4 @ 10:00 am - 11:15 am PST

Eating disorder treatment often replicates punitive justice systems that not only leave many clients unsupported but actually harmed. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a framework that can support dietitians to step outside of these systems.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the basic framework of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.
  2. Identify how to integrate the IFS framework into nutrition counseling.
  3. Discern between talking about the framework and doing IFS.

Level: A/B

Level A: Foundational Knowledge

This level introduces core concepts, terminology, and basic principles. Participants gain a solid understanding of essential information needed to build competence in the subject area. Ideal for newcomers or those seeking a structured overview.

Level B: Skills and Application

At this level, learners move beyond theory to actively apply knowledge in practical settings. Emphasis is on developing proficiency, problem-solving, and hands-on skills that can be implemented in real-world scenarios. Ideal for practitioners looking to strengthen their capabilities.

Mimosa began her career as a dietitian in community health and interned at farms throughout the country to learn about food systems from the source. With this intention, she works with psychodramatist Dr Leticia Nieto, is part of the Eating Disorder Harm Reduction provider’s network facilitated by Gloria Lucas, and continues working with mentors and educators to unlearn white supremacy culture. Her passion for client-centered care as liberatory care has been shared through regional conferences, workshops, and mentorship. Through her work, Mimosa continues to challenge traditional models of treatment by illuminating power imbalance in eating disorder recovery and disrupting that imbalance one client at a time.
