Going Deeper: Therapeutic Modalities in Nutrition Counseling; How, Why, When
February 20 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm PST
As dietitians treating individuals with disordered eating and eating disorders, we understand that treatment and change are a lot more complex than simply providing nutrition recommendations. Often, training on various therapeutic modalities will be offered, but many of us struggle to know when to use a certain therapeutic approach, how to incorporate it in our nutrition counseling without stepping out of our lane, and why we would opt to use certain modalities for certain presentations while favoring others in another circumstance.
This presentation is meant for professionals who already have an introductory understanding of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). It will allow participants to understand how to differentiate each therapeutic modality, the core tenants of each modality, how they are relevant to nutrition counseling, and for what clientele each was developed – in addition to getting practical tools and skills in knowing when and how to incorporate these modalities in their nutrition counseling. Case studies will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Overview CBT, ACT, and DBT, as well as briefly introduce RO-DBT and IFS.
- Distinguish between the modalities by understanding core tenants, how to incorporate them in nutrition counseling, and for which clinical presentation each could be relevant.
- Understand what implementation of therapeutic approaches looks like in action using case studies.
