Emerging Dietary Considerations of Cannabis Use in Eating Disorder Treatment

| Drawing on social science, medical research, and a little bit of pop culture, this webinar will inform eating disorder dietitians on the latest dietary considerations in cannabis usage. Dietitians will learn about how the increased availability and potency of cannabis have led to new concerns with eating disorder patients of all diagnoses, such as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and sub-clinical cyclic vomiting. While focusing on ARFID, binge eating disorder, and bulimia nervosa, it is a webinar that will be information for all diagnoses of eating disorders. |
Learning Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will:
- Review the trends in cannabis consumption that have emerged in the past decade and how increased potency and accessibility have led to new concerns in eating disorder treatment.
- Learn how cannabis can impact the central nervous system and gut-brain connection and the relevance of these considerations in treating patients with ARFID, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa.
- Explore the recent spike in Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome diagnoses and its relationship to cannabis’ long-standing reputation as an appetite stimulant and nausea suppressant

Ian Cohen, RD, CEDS Bio:
Ian Cohen is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist who serves as the Lead Dietitian for the Adult Program at UC San Diego Health Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Virginia and worked in the entertainment industry for five years before dedicating himself to a career that aligns with his passion for mental health and recovery, completing his Dietetic Internship at the University of Kentucky and Lexington Veteran Affairs Hospital. He is a contributor to UCSDH EDC’s Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) track and has presented numerous seminars on the intersection of nutrition and substance usage.
Ian is also a musician, journalist, and author whose first book, Feeling Neglected?, will be published by Atria Books in 2028.
